You can use any yarn. Follow the hook-size recommendation on its label. Different yarn and hook sizes will change the finished size and texture.

Abbreviations

SC — Single crochet

BOB — Bobble stitch: 3 double crochet before the last yarn over, all in one stitch.

This project also uses magic rings.

How to Make a Bobble Stitch

  1. Yarn over, insert the hook into the next stitch on your row, then yarn over.
  2. Pull the yarn through, yarn over again, and pull through two stitches on the hook.
  3. Repeat the first two steps twice in the same stitch until you have 4 stitches on the hook.
  4. Yarn over and pull through all stitches on the hook.

Starting the Tail

  1. Insert the hook into the first tail-placement stitch, hook the yarn, and bring it through.
  2. Yarn over and bring it through the stitch on the hook.
  3. Insert the hook into the next stitch and make a single crochet — this is your first stitch.
  4. Continue around for 5 more stitches. Mark the stitch behind the hook, then begin Round 2.

Attach the finished shell using a hot glue gun.

How to Make the Mouth

The mouth uses five placement points.

  1. Starting at the side, insert the needle and exit at the point next to it — the second point.
  2. Insert the needle back into the first point and exit at the middle point. Insert into point 2 and exit at point 4. Insert into the middle point and exit at point 5. Insert into point 4 and exit at point 1.
  3. The loose strands should now be next to each other. Tie them off, hide the thread inside the body, and adjust the smile with the needle as needed.

How to Attach the Eyes

  1. Place the eyes in the head where you want them.
  2. Remove the eye and squeeze some hot glue into the spot.
  3. Put the eye back in place, push, and secure.
